Mos Def “Life In Marvelous Times” Video
This is a fan made video for Mos’ hit track Life In Marvelous Times, the first single from his upcoming album “The Ecstatic.” Apparently, Mos picked this fan video to be the song’s official video – due to how the images perfectly match up with his lyrics.

Man I think that joint kinda sucks. Why are cats using these fake pop sounding beats? It sounds so artificial and hollow. Mos has just got so formulaic as an artist, I never really feel like he puts alotta work into joints anymore, just rests on his charisma. Not really feeling it…

I agree with Mtume, this tracks beat is very artificial (haha, well, it is a song about Barack Obama, oooooohhhh!!!). The lyrics at best have a good flow, but the content isn’t content, it’s empty filler. What’s so marvelous about these times? I feel no euphoria. I feel inspiration and hope because of recent uprisings that have taken place, like in Oakland and Greece. But other than that, the horrible normality of life continues to shoves its ugliness down my throat. It continues to glaze my eyes over. I see no marvel in these times. This song is just weak praise of the newest demagogue, nothing more, nothing less. It’s an expression of how easily people can be lulled by false hope and arrogance. I wonder what the emcees who praise and cheer for Barack Obama will be saying when the lull has passed and they see him for what he really is? That will be a good day, maybe even marvelous.

East,
I don’t think Mos is saying the times are a euphoria-inducing type of “marvelous,” but more just that they are complex and that there’s a beauty in that. It’s sort of like the “these are the days of lazers in the jungle” line from Paul Simon’s “Boy in the Bubble” off of the Graceland album. These times are ‘marvelous’ as in overwhelming, not as in utopian.

Well, in that case, everyday you wake up is marvelous, ain’t it? Now all we have to do is paralyze all “normality” (and then throw it into the river and watch it float down stream…) in society and then we can actually start living everyday to it’s true potential!!
