What’s with all the hot girls? Is this really the Flobots’ fanbase?

ya know man, we sent you this flobots record back in the fall of 2007 and you ignored it… do you only cover stuff once it is on TV?

Massive Music – you are clearly mistaken and i am inclined to take offense.

first, you never sent us this album. i got it first hand from Jonny 5’s brother – who is a friend of a friend of a friend. maybe you should get your mailing list checked for errors.

second, you should try clicking a link from time to time. if you would’ve checked this link (which is clearly listed below the above video under the title “Fight With Tools”): http://www.hiphoplinguistics.com/reviews/albums/2008/02/flobots-fight-with-tools you would’ve realized that we reviewed this album back in February – way before the band signed with Universal and way before they were on TV.

third, have you ever even visited this site before?!?! or are you one of the hundreds of selfish scavengers who want their albums reviewed but never read our articles, participate in our discussions, or do anything support our movement?

if you’d ever investigated this site before, you might realize that HHL is one of the very few sites on the Internet that actually covers the underground – and one of the fewer that will actually listen to and review independent and unsigned artists. and you got the nerve to say we only cover stuff once it’s on TV?!?!

if you’ve sent us stuff that didn’t get covered, maybe you should try sending some tighter shit. until then, get your facts straight homie. PEACE.

actually it was the first time we had sent you anything, and we aren’t bloggers, so no we don’t participate in your discussions- that would be a conflict of interests, wouldn’t it?

in Feb., we were already done working this record, as I said before we sent it in the fall of 2007, when the flobots hired us with their own money… by february, universal was already in the picture- but of course you know that.

just seems odd that you advertise that you write about underground hip hop but wouldn’t write about the flobots until they were on universal. thats all i was saying-

there is a lot of good music out there that isn’t on a label, or Jay Leno.

flobots were one of them, back in fall of 2007 when we mailed this to you. back before they were on your TV.

            PEACE

Jeez – this Massive Music guy is a complete idiot. Didn’t you hear the man say he never received the CD you claim to have sent? And you don’t have to be a blogger to follow this site.

The Flobots didn’t sign with Universal until the end of March. So a review posted in the beginning of February definitely prooves that HHL didn’t wait until the group signed with Universal to review their album. It’s simple Mathematics really.

Also look at the reviews section. It’s all underground stuff. Hell, look at the featured albums to your left! Only one of the ten albums is from a major label, and five of the ten are from unsigned artists.

Massive Music you have no point whatsoever. And you’re obviously just bitter that no one wants to listen to your shitty roster of artists.

As the person responsible for all CD submissions, I can confirm that we never received this album from Massive. We have switched addresses like three times in the past year, however. Get at me for current submission locations.

The only CD I have on record from them is some emcee named Apostle, who I thought was pretty fresh.

Yep. Massive Music – you’re looking pretty stupid.

I can’t believe this guy tried to knock HHL for covering artists only once they are on TV. Where in the hell did that come from?!?!

Clearly, this is another cat that wants to get, but not give. MM – this HHL community is hip hop. Being involved in this community is hip hop. Running a bootleg label / CD manufacturing company does not on its own make you hip hop. Get involved in the community, don’t just bitch about somebody not giving you free publicity at the moment that you supposedly demanded it.

And for the record, HHL’s Flobots review was done well before they began “blowing up”. Props to HHL for not only covering their music before every other website jumped on Flobots’ nuts, but also for this follow up thread to give a congrats to the group for their success in getting their music out to more ears.

And to you MM, congrats on losing any potential future fans. Way to go.

APOSTLE is fresh; thanks. I hope you will show him some love. Clearly we do have the address correct, considering that you received that one.

Fisch.. I’m not looking for fans. I’m looking to get people to talk about the projects I work on. I’m not a label. I am a promotions agent. I specialize in free publicity and I was hired by the flobots. i already stated that. they paid me with their own money before a label was involved. we got them on the CMJ-Hip Hop charts in the fall- BEFORE a label was involved. You calling me stupid is ironic on many levels. I manufactured over 10,000 CDs for the flobots until Universal took them over. Also, if you bought it on itunes up until April 15 of 2008- well then you bought it from me.

here is my website again in case you didn’t understand what Massive Music is:

                    http://www.massivemusicamerica.com

You can ask the Flobots for a reference.

I do a lot for underground music of all kinds. If you can’t see that you are blind my friend.

Anyone in the industry new that the flobots were getting signed way before March.

I wasn’t trying to start a big bitch festival, i was just saying it is frustrating to see people now covering stuff like it is new when we sent it last year and nothing happened. If you never received it from us, fair enough. But you have to at least see where I might be coming from.

APOSTLE is just as important to me and I think just as deserving of the attention. He isn’t on Jay Leno, and he also is not on HHL, even though it is “pretty fresh.”

Calling it like I see it.

MM – i apologize for jumping on you yesterday. now that i’ve read it back, i realize that my tone was uncalled for. i can understand your frustration if people didn’t support the group until after they signed a deal. but you seem unwilling to understand our frustration with your blatently false accusations.

you accused us of only covering the flobots because the group was on TV. that’s like me accusing you of only promoting the flobots because they were on TV. you might respond “but i promoted them before they were signed.” well, we gave them 4 stars and featured them in our “track of the week” section before they were signed – that is clear from the dates of the posts. but you continue to stick to your own version of what happened. and that’s why everyone is ganging up on you.

HOW MANY TIMES do we have to tell you that we didn’t receive the flobots cd from you? we get a lot of albums in the mail – and some don’t make it to us. you of all people should know that this happens.

HOW MANY TIMES do we have to tell you that we posted the review almost two months before the band was signed – and almost four months before they were on TV? we’re not, as you would say, “in the industry” – we had no idea a deal was brewing, and only found out when the press release hit the stands at the end of march.

either way, who cares? HHL covers conscious, intellectual hip-hop. the flobots are conscious, intellectual hip-hop. regardless of time, the band fits the direction of this site perfectly. and if we can introduce them to our readership, most of whom doesn’t watch Jay Leno anyway, why shouldn’t we?

I still don’t see where you’re coming from MMA. You sound selfish to me. You’re not happy the Flobots are blowing up – you’re bitter because Universal made it happen and you didn’t.

You’re not happy that HHL gave the album 4 stars – you’re upset because it took someone else giving it to them to make that happen and now you can’t take credit for the review.

It’s almost like you wish they weren’t having any success so they would continue to pay you. You sound like someone who is only out for himself – someone who is greedy, jealous and spiteful.

Unlike you, HHL doesn’t get paid for this. They do it out of love. Shit, according to their advertising page, they donate 100% of their earnings to charity. How much do you give to charity MMA? Would you still promote if you couldn’t overcharge starving artists thousands of dollars for your packages?

Just calling it like I see it …

jay. you are talking out of your ass.

universal didn’t make flobots famous, the flobots did that for themselves. like i said, they were blowing up before universal signed them- we got them on the college charts in the fall. and i’m super happy for them all- i know them personally and that is why they hired MMA. they come to my house to pick up the CDs we manufactured for them… OK?

as for me making money off of the flobots- i think in the end, the flobots made a good call in hiring MMA. why don’t you ask them how they feel about it? do you think the results of the promotion work we did for them in the fall might have had something to do with all this other stuff in any way? per chance? they didn’t hire me on a whim. they hired me because they know me and can come to my house. you don’t know what you are talking about. you aren’t even a legitimate part of this conversation. like a virtual fly buzzing around my head while i try to speak to HHL.

i agreed to release the flobots from any contracts if they got signed to a larger label. i kept my word. i don’t think that is selfish at all. universal couldn’t have taken the rights from me if i didn’t agree to do that, and that would have kept the flobots from getting the deal at all… see how the business works? no?

i can tell you that anyone else in my position wouldn’t have released them to universal. i did that because we are friends and i told them that is what i would do. i actually lost money on that. see what i mean about talking out of your ass?

                              nathaniel-

i totally believe you. my initial comment may have seemed harsh and i apologize for that- if you never received the CD from us, cool. sorry. i really do believe you, because we just got another one sent back to us yesterday.. haha
                              glad you got APOSTLE tho.

i am merely looking out for the people i work with and standing up for them whenever i think something needs to be said. in this case, maybe i was too rash- i have apologized.

that doesn’t mean i will stop making noise when i think something is bunk tho- it is my job to make noise, and if i worked for you, you’d be glad i was on your side.

                              PEACE

they made me think of another band i recently came across and love…knock-out from california. they are awesome!

The Flobots are an incredible group that puts out smart, fresh ear-candy with a social conscience. They are a rare treasure in the stagnant cesspool of modern “music”.

PS: Massive- promotions, seriously? I don’t think your pompous, uninformed, and totally misdirected bitching is the kind of publicity they’re looking for.

See, this is what I really hate about the music industry. This site posts something about a new, interesting band, and what happens — the conversation devolves into who heard of them first, how they got to be famous, etc. etc. I know music is a business first and foremost in this day and age, but damn — can we focus on the important stuff for a minute?

This is a band that, since its inception, has used their growing fame to lend support to a ton of different social support programs, including but not limited to the recent Rock the Vote campaign. Despite their well-published support for Barack Obama, they still went totally non-partisan for RTV and recorded this video (link below) to help convince the youth of America to vote regardless of their affiliation. How many other artists use their celebrity status to that effect?

I’m impressed. You should be too.
