Track of the Week: Jake Lefco “When It Rains”

Jake Lefco

This week’s underground hip-hop track of the week is Jake Lefco’s When It Rains, a dope track that could be considered a bartender’s hip-hop anthem – from Jake’s album “Missing Trooth.” When It Rains tells the stories of the man behind the bar, and is a must hear for anyone who has either bartended, or spent a significant amount of time on the other side of the bar. [Verse 1]
I can see those scars/
Hear the pain in your voice from this side of the bar/
Shit I try to ignore/
I’m a fly on the wall/
While you’re all getting shitty/
Self-pity, sex and drugs in the city/
This is addiction you gotta understand/
I’m the man as long as there’s bottles in my hand/
And it’s true you got the right to drink, dance and party too/
The problem is when partying is all you do/
Every night it’s like you’re scared of sobriety/
It’s either that or you hate life entirely/
Grown men confide in me/
Break down and cry to me/
Then the same night they make dress and lie to me/
Can’t predict how they act on the other side/
I told myself ‘I wanna quit this’ a hundred times/
Just like any good job there’s an ugly side/
So I smile and nod – get that money, right?/

[Chorus]
From this side of the bar the party’s ugly/
From that side the party loves me/
They say gimme one, gimme one, gimme one more/
When it rains I pour/

[Verse 2]
Think what you will about the job, think it’s glamorous?/
Think I get paid to party? You don’t know the half of it/
I’m the one plunging the toilet when they clog it up/
Drink til they yak I’m the cat mopping vomit up/
You’d think that college kids would know how to think/
They don’t know how to act, but they know how to drink/
A lot of wanna be tough guys and beer muscle meatheads/
Neighborhood crackheads and suits on the weekends/
Liquids that get kids in fights over minor shit/
Looking for trouble and they know where to find the shit/
Tortured by the talk a thousand miles a minute coke and/
Hit the bathroom every five act surprised when her nose bled/
Four in the morning begging for a bump/
Think that powder won’t kill her – one line’s enough/
She leeches on rich men who buy the drugs/
’Cause times are tough, she’s sniffing all kinds of stuff/

[Chorus]
From this side of the bar the party’s ugly/
From that side the party loves me/
They say gimme one, gimme one, gimme one more/
When it rains I pour/

[Verse 3]
Shots on the house kamikazes all around/
’Bottom’s up!’ ‘Salud!’ You love me right now/
Like the chick’s in short skirts who flirt when they see me/
Eyes all dreamy for a free martini/
Happens routinely, some sleezy, some tease me/
Some are just flat broke and some are just easy/
Bright beautiful girls coming to booze young and confused/
Getting used by the slimiest dudes/
The little wink, a cheap pickup line and a drink/
In a blink have ‘em bent over the bathroom sink/
It’s sad to think that I’m the one supplying the substance/
To make a woman wile out and lie to her husband/
Old thighs but wise – double lives it’s ridiculous/
Using fake names ‘cause they came with their mistresses/
Next time you drink away the pain acting ignorant/
The bartender’s listenin’ – hope you’re tippin’ him/

[Chorus]
From this side of the bar the party’s ugly/
From that side the party loves me/
They say gimme one, gimme one, gimme one more/
When it rains I pour/

I worked behind a bar too long to know that Jake is spitting the truth…. one of the tracks of the album for sure…

Verse 1 has a typo (I think). It sounds like he says this instead:

“Then the same night they make threats and lie to me/”
