Rob Rush “Childhood Hero” Album Review
People don’t have enough confidence in themselves nowadays. And if there’s anywhere in popular culture where that’s blatantly apparent, it would probably be mainstream hip-hop. So many cats copy the popular styles and fads of radio and television that it seems like few artists are secure enough to be themselves on the mic instead of acting out some image that may be more publicly accepted.
However, in the underground you’ll find somewhat of the antithesis of this behavior. More and more, I come across underground MCs who make music about the lives they really live. Rob Rush is one such MC. “Childhood Hero” is an impressive debut release that celebrates being different, being driven, and most of all, being optimistic.
Although the album ranges in themes and ideas from song to song, the overall feeling is one of positivity, determination and happiness. Rob Rush obviously doesn’t want to be anything other than what he is, and reiterates his goal to work hard and make the best of his opportunities while they’re available. The production is a little old-school, a little party and a little jazzy, with samples, horns and keys common. Overall, a very laid back and enjoyable listen.
More MCs need to be proud of who they are and what they have to offer the culture of hip-hop. The best way to do this is to develop your own style, talk about your own topics and push your own ideology to your listeners. Rob Rush’s “Childhood Hero” does all three, and that’s not easiest thing to find in the current popular state of hip-hop.
