birddigital..u on the money...I'm from not only the old school, but also the original school (cold crush, treacherous 3, fantastic 5, funky 4+1, etc..) where a distribution deal and your HOTNESS was classified as how many copies of your tape circulated in the hood FOR FREE!!!!! It was all word of mouth and street promotions by handing out and stapling flyers...hahaha... those were the days

but back to your point its a great one...unfortunately most of those artist who were so instrumental to the cornerstone of hip hop never had the national voice and unless you were a New Yorker you don't even know they existed...and therefore they dont get the true honor they deserve.

But i do have a suggestion...since they seem to be honoring across the time line (old school, mid school, new school) so they can draw more viewers...maybe they should have a "FOUNDING FATHERS" honor one year to replace the old school artist they would have normally honored...This way they get their long awaited due as well as educating the new school artist as well as listener

Honorees that would make sense this year would be Slick Rick, Biz Markie, Naughty by Nature, the Geto Boys, Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince and some others...Artists like Nas, Jay, and Outkast are too soon to be honored, because there are crucial pioneers that come b4 them that have not been honored...On the other hand rappers like Kool G Rap, Too Short, UGK, Schoolly D, the Pharcyde and others deserve honors, but are probably difficult to honor because they do not have a widely known catalogue compared to the honorees of the past, and Vh1 want ratings, they don't necessarily concern with what true rap heads want...
