New York Times Shows HHL Some Love and Teaches Valuable Lessons

C-Rayz Walz & Kosha Dillz’ Donate 10% of New Album Sales to Charity

C-Rayz Walz has teamed up with Kosha Dillz to create hip-hop’s first ever Jewish-African American collaboration album of it’s kind. 10% of all proceeds from the album, titled “Freestyle vs. Written,” will be donated to Netivot Israel Louna Terror Victim Fund and to the Foundation for Ethnic Understanding, an organization dedicated to strengthening relations between ethnic communities.

It’s an album that breaks borders and pushes boundaries. Songs like “I Love Jews” and “Ariel Sharon” are packed with classic hip rock samples and party moving sounds. Boasting collaborations with Murs, Matisyahu and MF Doom between them, and gracing the covers of news magazines such as Entertainment Weekly and Source Magazine and spots on MTV, the two artists are ready to take the world by storm. Arrested Development’s Speech Keeps Family Corn Business Alive

Milwaukeeans may remember Speech for his community-conscious music as the founder and producer of the Grammy Award-winning, alternative hip-hop group Arrested Development. Speech, whose real name is Todd Thomas, never forgot his Milwaukee roots after finding musical success. That’s good news for Summerfest-goers, who have come to depend on a tradition started by Speech’s father, Robert Thomas: Robby’s Roasted Corn.

When his father suffered a stroke several years ago, the Rufus King graduate stepped up to keep the family business alive. Speech, who lives in Atlanta, purchased the business in 2005 and has returned to Milwaukee every year since to oversee his family’s corn business during the 11-day lakefront music festival. He even works his travel schedule around Summerfest. He’s currently touring with Arrested Development in the United States, Europe, Australia, Asia and the Middle East. (more…)

U.S. Volunteers Bring Aid and Hip-Hop to Cuba

It’s a world in which hundreds of hip-hop groups are forming across the island, inspired by not only the love of the beat, but of the forceful, often-political, empowerment that it brings. But unlike hip-hop in the United States, there’s no promise of a better life in Cuba for rappers or those who crave that musical motivation for change.

Albuquerque’s Cyrus Gould knows the world news well. Gould, 26, is among the more than 130 Pastors for Peace volunteers from the United States, Canada and Europe who will challenge what they believe is the immoral and illegal U.S. travel and trade restrictions against Cuba on July 3. Gould and a few others were picked up by a caravan winding its way across the U.S. on Thursday night. (more…)

Hip-Hop’s Kevin Powell Running For Congress

It’s just after 11 a.m. on a hazy Memorial Day in the Fort Greene section of Brooklyn. Outside Tillie’s of Brooklyn, a trendy café near the corner of DeKalb and Vanderbilt avenues, a multiracial group of a dozen young men and women arrange themselves in a semicircle to be briefed on their itinerary for the afternoon.

Standing before them is the author and activist Kevin Powell, 42, who holds up a voter registration card. “You all have a working knowledge of local politics,” Powell says. “You’re gonna hear people say, ‘I don’t think my vote matters,’ but you gotta have a quick response.” Soon after, the lively group splits up and veers into different directions, hauling campaign literature, voter registration news materials and bottles of water.
