It might actually be worth your time to watch the BET Hip-Hop Awards this year – at least a segment of it. Although I don’t listen to the majority of those cats, Common and Kanye are up for awards. And now BET has announced that KRS-One will receive the “I Am Hip-Hop Award.” I guess they did this last year too, and gave Grandmaster Flash the award.

Traditional hip-hop lyrics about guns, women and homophobia are about to face a new competitor in the race for young Americans’ hearts and minds.

Princeton religious professor Cornel West has released an album designed to counter rap’s negative image, with major names like KRS-One and Levert participating.

“We need to respectfully challenge [rappers] on the issues of misogyny and homophobia,” says West. “You can hear that on the album, too. Quit bashing gay brothers and lesbian sisters. Quit this domestic violence.” (more…)

KRS-One & Marley Marl “Hip Hop Lives” Album Review
I know I’m a little late on this one. KRS-One & Marley Marl’s “Hip Hop Lives” dropped two months ago, and I just couldn’t get around to the album until this week. But that’s not a problem. With other albums, it would be. If I put off most hip-hop albums a month or two, I’m normally too consumed with newer stuff to get around to giving them a good listen. But KRS-One is classic and timeless. I keep his releases around for as long as I need to bring them to the forefront. And I am never disappointed. (more…)

KRS-One “Life” Album Review
I got a little discouraged while researching this album. I could only find three websites that reviewed it, and just one was favorable. One response even contained the phrase “this cat can’t rap no more.” I must say I was quite taken aback by this, because I think “Life” is easily one of the best releases of the year, and among KRS-One’s best albums to date. And with fifteen quality albums to choose from, that’s saying a lot. (more…)
