Ann Arbor, MI - The ensemble that takes the stage Monday on Monday at Hill Auditorium is being billed as the Mos Def Big Band. The big question that hip-hop fans may have is about the “big band” moniker - which usually suggests something in a jazzy vein.
But hard-core Mos fans needn’t worry that this is going to be some hybrid of hip-hop and Count Basie. The “big band” appellation in this case is a reference to the fact that Mos will have a number of live musicians onstage, including horn players. That’s a departure from many hip-hop shows, which typically comprise just the rapper, a DJ and someone triggering computerized samples. (more…)
2K Sports today announced the soundtrack for NBA 2K8, which will feature 23 tracks, including three produced by late producer, J Dilla ( a.k.a. Jay Dee). Common, Talib Kweli, Madlib, and Q-Tip, all of whom had previously worked with J Dilla before his death early last year, contributed vocals for the tracks.
“J Dilla was one of the industry’s greatest talents,” said Q-Tip. “This recording is reflective of his legacy and of the wonderful body of work that he left behind.” (more…)
The Fifth Annual Detroit Hip Hop Awards celebrated local talent, whom continually tough it out, producing bumpin’ grooves. Held at the nightclub Plan B in Detroit, the enthusiastic and diverse crowd, greeted, cheered and enjoyed performances by word-slingers Brilliance, Young Product &YBL, Phat Kat, Stretch Money and K-Deezy.
This year’s 18 and up-event was hosted by Mark Da Spark. While it was hoped that the event would start at 9 p.m., the festivities didn’t kick-off until 10:45 p.m. Such is hip hop. (more…)
While this is old news, it seems that there is very little mention in national news of this talented individual. While the death of Tupac and B.I.G are brought up anytime anyone mentions Hip Hop, J Dilla’s death seemed to receive very little spotlight, especially considering his huge contributions to the culture.
Anyone familiar with Tribe Called Quest, Slum Village, Common, The Roots, De La Soul, The Pharcyde, Busta Rhymes, and countless others should take a moment to look at this man’s entire discography. (more…)
