Greatest Hip-Hop Groups of All Time

Black StarIn celebration of the MTV Brain Trust’s newest debate over the “Greatest Hip-Hop Groups of All Time,” I’ve decided to pick my top ten groups of all time with two or more MCs. Ten bucks says MTV doesn’t even mention half. Either way, check out the broadcast Sunday, March 4 on MTV2.

  1. Black Star
  2. Living Legends
  3. The Roots
  4. Outkast
  5. Fugees
  6. Dead Prez
  7. Digable Planets
  8. Public Enemy
  9. Blackalicious
  10. A Tribe Called Quest

Honorable Mention: Wu Tang Clan, De La Soul, Gangstarr, Goodie Mob, Jurassic 5, NWA, Run DMC, Beastie Boys, Dilated Peoples, X Clan.

Who the fuck is this clown Nat? This dude obviously knows nothing about Hip Hop. Where is Eric B. and Rakim? Boot Camp Clik? DITC? EPMD? Brand Nubian? Plus, he’s boosting MTV?

Seriously, these conversations never have any legitimate answers… and I love to have them anyway.

I’d have to add a couple of my own to the list. I think Wu-Tang deserves more than an honorable mention. They’ve done so much for hip-hop and continue to rock it. We may never see a super-group like them again.

A group that HAS to be mentioned is Company Flow. The most innovative cats ever, and we wouldn’t have the underground as it is without them.

Damn. It’s hard to pair it down to only ten.

… Black Sheep? Pete Rock and CL Smooth? Pharcyde? MOP?

AJ makes a great point too! The Wu didn’t only bring about a new sound and the first major group to be able to sell their group album plus about fitty ele’en hunded and eight solo albums, but they can be credited with being a pioneer in capitalizing on branding. Before RocaWear, Sean John, etc. there was Wu Wear. Remember Wu Wear Wallabies?

So I know it’s a stretch but I would have to give it up to Atmosphere. The stretch happens with the fact they have one emcee now, because spawn left, but they have filled the spot rotating cats off rhymesayers. Either way they started with multiple cats that could spit. Did DJ Jazzy Jeff ever bust a flow on tape…

I find it difficult to rate a hip hop group due to the fact that music is a form art. And as we all know art has no boundaries. So I have much respect for all these groups they all did their thing in their time. Peace!
