Music Submissions

First off, thank you all for your submissions. We enjoy checking out every album, video and track we receive.

There are currently 4 ways to get featured on HipHopLinguistics.com. If it’s not in this list, we don’t do it:

  1. Album review
  2. Video post
  3. Featured track of the week or
  4. Featured hip-hop quotable.

Please note that this list does not include reviewing individual tracks for you, or giving you personalized feedback on your music. It also does not include posting press releases or helping you promote your album. If you want to advertise, click here.

We currently feature only what we feel is good hip-hop on HHL, so you have to either be in the top tier to get a feature on the website, or possess something special, unique, interesting, different. Unlike other review sites, we don’t publish negative reviews, so if we aren’t feeling an album, we won’t mention it at all.

If you think you should get a feature on HHL, follow the submission guidelines below.

Step 1: Submit a song
First, please send us a preview track to listen to by using our contact form. In this form, please introduce yourself and your music. Provide either a link we can use to download a track, or a link to your MySpace/Facebook/ReverbNation or other social community page where we can hear your song(s). We should always be able to BOTH preview and download your track. NOTE: If you’d like to be considered for a hip-hop quotable feature, you will also need to provide lyrics to the song. If we’re feeling the track, we’ll post it.

Step 2: Submit a video
Next, you can submit any music videos you have for feature on the website. To do this, simply provide a link to your YouTube/Vimeo/MySpace Video profile, or a link directly to the video you would like considered. If we’re feeling the video, we’ll post it.

Step 3: Submit an album
Due to the high volumes of album submissions we receive, we are no longer accepting albums from people who have not completed either steps 1 or 2 above. If we sample your music and like it, we will accept your album for submission. Unfortunately, the mail here in NYC sucks – and the post office no longer delivers CDs to the crib. So for the time being, we will only be accepting digital submissions.

When we agree to take your album submission, we request that you make it available for us to download. You can do this by uploading the mp3 files to any file sharing site such as Sharebee, Mediafire, Zshare, etc. If you can’t do this, contact us and we can give you a place to upload the album on our servers. We also request that the album is available for either purchase, or public download – so that our visitors can cop it if they want.

This is the music submission process y’all. Simple enough, right? Good luck!

PEACE

P.S. – Recommendations from the Editor
The best recommendation we can give to help you and your music break through the clutter is to MAKE THIS EASY ON US! The more work we have to do to access your music, videos, etc., the more likely we are to delete your email and move on to the next. So here are some tips to help you through the submission process:

Tip 1: Make your tracks available for both preview AND download
Most cats only do one of these  – meaning they give us a link to MySpace to listen to their track, but don’t make it downloadable; OR they give us link to download the file, but don’t give us a chance to preview it.

A lot of times we’ll listen to a track on MySpace and like it – but if we can’t download it for reposting on the website, we’re not always going to have time to email you and request it. Other times we’ll be too swamped to go through the process of downloading your track, putting it in the stack, and getting it assigned to someone to listen to it – especially when we don’t even know if it’s tight. So sometimes simple download links just get lost in the process.

So HELP US HELP YOU! It’s a simple process: preview track, download track, feature track.

Tip 2: Follow the Directions!
Even though these directions are very simple, we still get hundreds of emails from artists requesting song feedback, song reviews, or places to send the album. If you make a submission and it is clear that you either didn’t read the directions or are not following them, you probably won’t get a response.

Tip 3: Participate
If there’s one thing we are learning to hate, it’s artists who want to be featured on HHL, but don’t participate in our community. There are way too many selfish cats out there who want us to support them, but don’t support us in return. If you want to get known around here, participate! Visit the site; leave comments; subscribe to the newsletter.
