A Fordham University professor has been tapped as an expert for the popular PBS show, History Detectives. Mark Naison, Ph.D., professor of African and African-American studies, provided news commentary for an upcoming episode in which the show’s hosts attempted to find out if 1520 Sedgwick Ave. in the Bronx was the birthplace of Hip-Hop.
“I had a great time with the crew for this show and am proud we had a chance to showcase the work we do before a national audience,” said Naison, the principal investigator for the University’s Bronx African American History Project (BAAHP). Naison was interviewed on the Rose Hill campus for an episode set to air in August. Tukufu Zuberi, Ph.D., one of the show’s “detectives” and chair of the sociology department at the University of Pennsylvania, led the interview. (more…)
Prolyphic & Reanimator “The Ugly Truth” Album Review
Prolyphic and Reanimator don’t make music that has what you might call “popular appeal.” You’ll probably never read about them in that hip-hop magazine you pay $12 a year for. You won’t likely hear one of their singles on your local hip-hop station – even if you’re a baller with XM. And you’ll definitely never turn to MTV and see them featured on any top video countdowns. Well, that’s too bad, because despite its lack of pop appeal, Prolyphic and Reanimator’s “The Ugly Truth” has made the most memorable impression of any album to drop in thus far in 2008. (more…)

Rocky Mount, NC – Local youth saw a different side of hip-hop news Saturday, learning “hot tracks” to carry them through life. Motivational hip-hop speaker Nubian Scholar brought his Cit2bit methodology to Rocky Mount to stress the positive paths youth should take in life. Scholar shared personal stories about growing up in a household where he once counted 66 mice run across the floor in one day. The embarrassment of purchasing groceries with food stamps and having a sister addicted to crack.
The D.C. native told the crowd of about 40 youth and parents that hip-hop helped him rise above meager beginnings and helped him earn a degree from Howard University. “I understand there’s a will, there’s a way,” Scholar said. “I realize that if you use the power, the technique, the talent, the ability in hip-hop, you can transform your life and dictate where you go.” (more…)
Somerville, MA – Cerebral palsy has rendered his hands useless and confined him to a wheelchair, but activist Keith Jones is anything but constrained. Rather then succumb to resentment or sink into a system that has left so many others with disabilities behind, Jones, 38, has taken life by storm.
The multitalented entrepreneur who was recently featured in the documentary “Labeled Disabled” has self-produced two hip-hop albums, can write with his feet, and on June 20 will officially announce the news that he is running for John Kerry’s seat in the U.S. Senate. (more…)

South Bronx residents rallied Wednesday night to demand the release of two members of a local hip hop group who were arrested after a confrontation with police. Rebel Diaz members Rodstarz and G-1, whose real names are Rodrigo and Gonzalo Venegas, were taken into custody in the Bronx Wednesday afternoon.
A news release from Rebel Diaz says the two saw the officers assault a fruit vendor, and when they took out a cell phone to record the incident, the officers approached them. Authorities say the duo became unruly with the officers, who were helping sanitation and health officials investigate illegal fruit vendors in the Bronx. But community members say that was not the case. (more…)
