Educated Figures “Educated Figures” Album Review
My parents used to make me go to church as a kid. And as far back as I could remember, I hated it. It wasn’t that I was not intrigued by the beliefs or inspired by the stories in the Bible, because I have always enjoyed that part. But even at a very young age, I saw holes in the way the information was presented to us children. (more…)
For the first time in the history of HipHopLinguistics.Com, we have received hate mail. Well, not really hate mail … just a couple kids clowning on the contents of our hip-hop news section. In the month of September, I linked to two articles about the homosexual hip-hop movement:
- QUEER HIP HOP SHOWCASED IN NEW FILM – About a new documentary called “Pick Up the Mic,” which follows MCs, producers and fans of America’s rapidly growing gay hip-hop movement, and …
- London to host gay hip hop festival – About London’s upcoming gay hip hop festival, PeaceOUT, which will take place in October.
Ever since these articles have been posted, I have received a handful of emails criticizing us for acknowledging the homosexual hip-hop movement from people who believe there is no place in hip-hop for homosexuals. (more…)

Spokinn Movement “60 Min. Spin Cycle” Album Review
This weekend I traveled up to the beautiful mountain town of Telluride, CO for the second time in as many months to check out another one of their music festivals: The Blues and Brews Festival. Basically, a bunch of people go to the mountains every September for three days to listen to blues music while sampling beer from over fifty national breweries. It’s a great time in some of our country’s most beautiful surroundings. (more…)

Heven & Hell “A Day in Your Life” Album Review
A lot of people think that I hate gangster and thug-style street rap. And for good reason. Hip-Hop Linguistics definitely tries to push positive and introspective hip-hop to our audience, and as of late, the gangsters and thugs on TV and the radio just haven’t been saying much. Now as much as I’d like to blame them for this, in actuality I think it’s really just a problem of voice. (more…)

Phynite ”Coping Mechanisms” Album Review
I received this EP with another EP, The Happy Masochist by Apollo’s Sun, from Sky’s the Limit Productions, an up-and-coming Pennsylvania-based hip-hop production company. I came across STLP when I reviewed Leaps & Bounds by Artists of Industry. Needless to say, Coping Mechanisms is the third hot album to come out of STLP, and judging on the sound and lyrical qualities displayed on each release, I think we can expect great things from this Phynite and Sky’s The Limit Productions in the future. I’ll tell you … it’s always the most ridiculous sociological studies that get the most press. A recent study conducted at the University of Leicester in Britain has concluded that hip-hop fans have more sex, commit more crimes, and are less religious than everyone else. The study has been reprinted in publications everywhere, including here, here, here and, of course, here.
Apparently, some 38 percent of hip-hop fans have had sex with multiple partners in the last five years, compared to only 1.5 percent of country music fans. In the meantime, 50 percent of hip-hop fans have broken the law, and a very low percentage have major religious affiliations. (more…)
My parents always tell me how they remember exactly where they were when JFK and MLK died. Most of our generation remembers exactly what we were doing when those planes crashed into the WTC towers. In a similar fashion, I remember exactly where I was when Tupac Amaru Shakur died.
It was the beginning of my freshman year in college. I was sitting in my dorm room with a couple of the fellas and a news flash blew up the screen informing the public that Tupac had died. I mean, everybody already knew he was shot after the Tyson fight a week before, but I guess we just all assumed he was alright. The news took me by shock, and I remember spending the rest of the evening playing through each of Pac’s albums while tilting forties. (more…)

Artists Over Industry ”Leaps & Bounds” Album Review
This is one of those albums I would have reviewed in depth if I wasn’t crazy busy right now. It contains a lot of topics for discussion, including songs touching on diverse subjects ranging from life, hip-hop, history, struggle, politics, current events, materialism, overcoming obstacles, and calming down in the face of anger. Lyrically one of the stronger underground releases of the year. (more…)

Dumhi “They Call Me Bruce” Album Review
Damn, man … this album messed up my entire week. I took vacation this week. My babygirl flew in from NYC and we drove out to the beautiful little ski town of Steamboat, Colorado to get away from the city and chill out for a couple days. I was amped, too … not just because my girl was in town, but because I was finally going to get some time to catch up on all the underground and independent albums we’ve been getting in the mail lately.
