I received an email last night from someone claiming to be part of the “Myanmar Future Generation” who had several questions about hip-hop. The email follows:
“I like hip hop but i really doesn’t know how rappers became outcast from the communities. I really want to know about people who like hiphop and like rock. I hate rock music but i never say negative emotional expression. Can i know what is hiphop ? what is the real life of hiphop? And how hiphop makes people to enjoy? That’s all!”

For those of you who live in New York City, I recently stumbled upon a super dope weekly hip-hop show that I highly recommend checking out. It takes place Monday nights at Sin Sin (The Leopard Lounge), located at 248 E. 5th Street in East Village. This show was recommended by two lovely ladies, Miss Sara and Miss Susan.
Although I was told the show consisted of spoken word performances, which in my mind means poetry, it is actually a weekly freestyle session put on by NYC’s own Spokinn Movement. Around 11 p.m. every Monday night, a live band takes the stage with impressive frontman and lyricist iLLsPoKinN. (more…)
I know this post is a little earlier in the day than normal, but I had to give a shout out and tell you about the amazing weekend I had. I was fortunate enough to be able to attend New York’s Hip-Hop Theater Festival this weekend, and was taken aback by the amount of raw, untapped talent I saw.
The poets, actors, playwrites and other participants possessed an admirable ability to surpass the humble venues and low capacity crowds they were faced with and give stellar performances nonetheless. Although I could talk at length about each performance on the weekend ticket, there were two that continue to stand out in my mind. (more…)

Sounds to the ceiling.
Tried to get this feeling since monday.
Looking out the window.
Watching all the people go.
Bugging off a funny vibe cause now it seems they’re equal.
Wonder what would Trane say.
Wonder what my pops say.
Bugging off the calmness in the Apple.
Who me? I’m cooling in New York.
Chilling in New York.
The hoods is on my block and the brothers at the court.
The baseball hats is on.
And the projects is calm.

This morning, I found an interesting internet article entitled “Top 10 Hip Hop Films.” Although I am a fan of every movie on this list, I feel that many hip-hop films of major importance were left out.
Therefore, I would like to add another 10 to let you in on some spectacular hip-hop films not mentioned that deserve recognition nonetheless. I highly recommend checking all of them out … (more…)

Storm Davis “Kegstand Poetry for the Recovering Alcoholic” Album Review
Everyone around me was interested in this album the second it came in the mail, mainly due to the title: “Kegstand Poetry for the Recovering Alcoholic.” I mean, we often hit keg parties around the way, and most of the people in my crew probably drink a little too much. And shit, while we’re being honest, I’m a pretty big pothead (I just like the chronic, yo … what can I say?). Therefore, an album that seemed to be based around substance addiction definitely caught my attention. (more…)
